Android ROM backup and restore

Creating ROM Backup

Flash the recovery image

$ ./fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-4.0.0.2-crespo.img
  sending 'recovery' (4040 KB)... OKAY [  0.642s]
            writing 'recovery'... OKAY [  0.540s]
finished. total time: 1.187s

The ClockworkMod Recovery should now be installed on the Nexus S.

Boot the phone in recovery mode and select the option “Backup and restore”

$ ./adb reboot recovery

In the phone menu:

  • +backup and restore
  • +backup

Let the system work. It takes a while for a full system backup

Once it is done the backup is stored in your computer just in case, although it should be kept in the sdcard. The backup is stored in /yoursdcard/clockworkmod/backup/YYYY-MM-DD.hh.mm.ss

In order not to reboot the phone, use the entry in the recovery menu to mount the USB storage

  • +mounts and storage

On your computer

$ sudo mount /dev/sdb
$ ls /clockworkmod/backup/YYYY-MM-DD.hh.mm.ss
boot.img  cache.img  data.img  nandroid.md5  recovery.img  system.img
$ cp -rf /clockworkmod/backup/YYYY-MM-DD.hh.mm.ss

Restoring ROM Backup

Option A: ROM is in the SD Card

Mount the SD card on your computer and copy the files to a clockworkmod directory

$ sudo mount /dev/sdb
$ cp -rf   /clockworkmod/backup/

Select the image you want to restore

Option B: ROM is in computer harddisk and not able to move it to the phone

Change directory to the images folder from the zip.

$ fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img
$ fastboot flash radio radio.img

In HTC – Developer Center it is described how to flash the ROM using fastboot with zip files, update.zip or image.zip. It also includes some other interesting information.
